What is Hospitality and Hospitality Management?

Hospitality refers to both:

  • A specialized industry: the hotel and catering industry
  • The functions and practices of all companies that seek customer satisfaction.

Hospitality management describes all the managerial practices of hospitality.

 

Hospitality is an industry that specializes in the happiness of its customers.

As a specialized industry, hospitality includes hotels, restaurants, leisure clubs, amusement parks, tourism and event companies... anything that makes people happy when they are on holiday or travelling. Within these companies, you will find management functions in sales, marketing, human resources, management, finance...

 

Hospitality goes far beyond the hotel and restaurant business.
In all other sectors, hospitality practices are essential for many functions that deal directly with clients. Think of private bank managers who deal with VIP customers, or a concept store manager who designs ways to help and encourage visitors to buy.

How can you contribute to  developing Africa?

Hospitality is one of the fastest growing industries, with over 3 million jobs to be created by 2030 in Africa, including 200,000 in Morocco.

Over 10,000 additional hospitality managers will be needed in Morocco!

You can help develop a new type of tourism and hospitality, that will showcase Africa's cultural and environmental treasures while helping to preserve them.

Here are some ideas of jobs related to food & beverage that would allow you to transform your passion for food into a successful career:

What are the best paid jobs, how much will you earn?

The best paid jobs are for senior managers or owners of successful start-ups.

You probably won't be hired as a manager immediately after graduation, but careers of talented young professionals are particularly fast in the hospitality industry. It's quite common to be a manager at 26.

Salaries vary greatly depending on the country or company you choose.

Good to know: Jobs in the hotel industry often come with perks such as meals and accommodation. If you work in large hotel groups, you may also benefit from highly discounted nights in various hotels - a nice bonus for your next holiday with family or friends.

Why shouldn't you do a business school instead?

A business school will give you the same management skills as those taught in prestigious hospitality management schools.

However, a generalist business education will not give you the competitive advantage of ready-to-apply practical skills, customer-oriented interpersonal skills and in-depth knowledge of one of the one of the fastest growing industries!

What should you know about SHBM?

SHBM is UM6P’s School of Hospitality Business & Management. It is located in Ben Guerir, where UM6P is building an entire hospitality ecosystem that will encourage innovation, applied research and entrepreneurship in hospitality.

SHBM welcomed its first Bachelor in Hospitality Business & Management degree intake in the fall of 2020.

The bachelor's degree in Hospitality Business & Management is accredited by the Moroccan ministry of Higher education.

Is SHBM one of the best schools for hospitality? 

There is not yet a renowned ranking for hospitality schools in Morocco.

Most hospitality schools (gestion hôtelière) in Morocco are focused on professional training, or are branch campuses of foreign schools, with teaching resources and study environments that are often less than their main campuses.

 

Morocco’s first and Africa’s only EHL-Certified School

After four years as an Associate Member of the EHL Network of Certified Schools, SHBM is officially an EHL Certified School in 2024. EHL (founded in 1893 as École hôtelière de Lausanne) is ranked as the No. 1 hospitality management school in several global rankings, making this certification an even greater testament to SHBM's commitment to world-class hospitality education.
